BAYNES PARK

Public BBQ

Nestled against the babbling Sassafras Creek in the Dandenong Ranges, Baynes Park offers that peculiar Australian combination of natural splendour and gentle chaos. The expansive sports oval sits framed by towering mountain ash and graceful oaks, while ferns carpet the understory in classic Victorian high country fashion. Covered picnic pavilions cluster near the car park alongside functioning gas barbecues,a blessed relief for families who've discovered their portable camping stove has mysteriously died. The creek proves endlessly fascinating to children, with one young angler reportedly landing an eel much to everyone's amazement. Forest walks reveal an astonishing variety of fungi, though visitors should mind the occasional fallen branch, storm damage being a persistent feature of mountain living. The playground and swimming pool provide reliable entertainment, while the soccer ground hosts everything from weekend matches to annual family reunions. One minor inconvenience: toilets require a 150-metre trek to the town centre, which tests the bladder capacity of both toddlers and their grandparents.
